Painted en plein air on a crisp winter day in Laguna Beach, this piece captures the excitement of a powerful Pacific swell. The waves crashed against the shore, and the sunlight danced across the water, making fragments of color illuminate like a stained glass window. The air was cool and clear, bringing out every shade and shimmer in the scene.
I had to paint fast—the ocean doesn’t wait. The energy of the waves, the movement of the light, and the ever-changing surf kept me on my toes. Billowing Surge is my attempt to bottle up that fleeting moment of power and beauty on canvas.
